Ballarat Paediatricians


Fiona trained as a paediatrician at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne and Royal Darwin Hospital. As a Consultant Paediatrician, she has worked in the Northern Territory before commencing work at Ballarat in 2008. Fiona works with the Victorian Paediatric Rehabilitation Service and with the paediatric diabetes clinic at Ballarat Health Services. She provides outreach ambulatory paediatric services to Stawell. Fiona is a lecturer with Melbourne University and Deakin University. She enjoys spending her free time with her husband and three children.
David completed his paediatric training through the Royal Children’s Hospital, before working in Albury-Wodonga.  He then worked in Malawi, Africa running a large unit dealing with many tropical diseases, malnutrition, TB and HIV.  David has worked in the Ballarat Region since 2008, developing interests in neonatal medicine, adolescent eating disorders and immigrant/refugee health.  David runs separate immigrant health clinics in Ballarat, Footscray and Melton, and is a senior lecturer at Deakin and Melbourne Universities.  In his spare time he likes pretending he is fit, enjoys spending time with his wife and wrangling his three lovely children.
Mark is a general paediatrician, born and bred in Ballarat, who returned in 2011 with his wife and two daughters. He is currently working both privately and publically in Ballarat, and is a lecturer for both Deakin and Melbourne University, and also provides outreach paediatric services to Stawell. 
 During his training, he was a gastroenterology fellow at Royal Children’s Hospital, and has a particular interest in encopresis, incontinence, allergy, and educating and empowering parents in regards to their children’s health.
 Outside of medicine, he is an avid writer of a blog at marknethercote.com, and likes to run around the lake at an ever-decreasing pace.
Shabna is a general paediatrician who graduated with honours from Cambridge University and completed her paediatric training in Nottingham, Oxford and the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne. She holds degrees in Neuroscience and a Masters in Medical Education. 
Shabs enjoys all aspects of paediatrics especially respiratory and allergy. She also instructs on APLS – a course teaching advanced resuscitation to health professionals around Australia. 
In her spare time she enjoys singing and playing the flute.

Austen is a South African trained Paediatrician who initially worked in the Johannesburg area before working in Botswana for 9 years. He then emigrated to Australia in 2006 to work in the Sale, where he continued his special interests in neurodevelopmental and behavioural paediatrics, and also provides outreach paediatric services to Horsham.
 Austen enjoys all aspects of his work, especially looking after children with ADHD and Autism. He loves spending time with his wife, two teenage children, and loves photography, reading books, cycling and taking his dogs for long walks.

Lakshman is a consultant general paediatrician at Ballarat Health Services with a strong interest in neuro-developmental and behavioural paediatrics. He completed his paediatric training in the UK. Lakshman has also worked in Mildura, taught at Monash Rural Medical School, and was an honorary senior lecturer in the University of East Anglia, United Kingdom. Lakshman has various interests, particularly improving the care for children with ADHD and Autism. He loves spending time with his family and enjoys watching cricket.
Megan completed her paediatric training at the Royal Children’s Hospital and the Mercy Hospital for Women. More recently she has been working with the Paediatric Infant and Perinatal Retrieval services as a retrieval Doctor for sick infants. Despite thoroughly enjoying her time there she is very excited to be returning to her home town of Ballarat.  She is passionate about all aspects of paediatric medicine, however, has particular interests in neonatal medicine, adolescent eating disorders and childhood adversity and mental health, and also provides outreach paediatric services to Stawell.  On days off, Megan can be seen running the lake with her beloved dog Bruno!
Alicia completed her early paediatric training at the Royal Children’s Hospital and the Mercy Hospital for Women, prior to undertaking the latter years of her training in Ballarat.  Her interests include neonatal medicine, communicable diseases, and endocrinology.  With a Masters of Public Health, Alicia is a strong advocate for a population approach to reducing early childhood adversity and improving the wellbeing of children.  She holds additional roles as a specialist within the Grampians Public Health Unit and is a member of the Ballarat4Kids coalition.  Outside of medicine, she enjoys spending time with her family and exploring the Grampians region.
Duaa is a general paediatrician who graduated with honours from Ain Shams University in Egypt and completed her paediatric training at Westmead Children’s Hospital in Sydney and Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital. She holds a Master’s in Paediatrics, a post-graduate clinical research certificate and currently, she’s a PhD student at Melbourne University.Duaa is dually trained in general paediatrics and clinical pharmacology. She enjoys all aspects of paediatrics, especially allergy. She also instructs on APLS – a course teaching advanced resuscitation to health professionals around Australia. She enjoys spending time with her three children and boxing in her free time.
Daniela is a general paediatrician who has trained at multiple sites across Melbourne, including the Royal Children’s Hospital and Monash Children’s Hospital, and started working in Ballarat in early 2022. She has a strong interest in public health and will soon complete a Masters of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. She enjoys all areas of paediatrics and is passionate about supporting children from disadvantaged and vulnerable backgrounds. Daniela also provides outreach paediatric services to Stawell. She and her husband have thoroughly enjoyed tasting their way through Ballarat’s amazing food scene and exploring and hiking in the Grampians region. 
Chamilka is a general paediatrician with more than 20 years’ experience in all aspects of Paediatrics (newborns to adolescents) including:

  • Behavioural problems (Autism, ADHD, other challenging behaviours)
  • Developmental problems (Developmental delay, Learning difficulties)
  • Growth concerns and feeding problems
  • Management and coordination of care for children with chronic illnesses or complex needs
  • Asthma, eczema and allergies

She has worked in Sri Lanka, UK and Australia in clinical paediatrics, research and medical education. Her work ethic focuses on building the bond of trust with parents and children to ensure a long-term, fruitful medical relationship.

Nelu completed her Paediatric training through the Royal Children’s Hospital and has worked at a range of hospitals in Melbourne and regional Victoria.  She has an interest in allergy, growth and feeding issues in infants, early parenting, and health administration. She has a toddler and very premature twins who keep her busy outside of work hours.
